Members of the Galle family have been farming for more than 40 years, first in Brunswick and now in Bowdoinham. Bowdoinham was traditionally a farming community, and it continues to be with a large number of organic vegetable farms and strong community support of agriculture. Apple Creek Farm was established in Bowdoinham by the Galle family in 1985. Though much of the land was originally clear the farmers continue to reclaim pastures turned forests. In addition, the farm utilizes over 70 acres of leased land in the surrounding area.
Though Jake grew up on the farm his travels after college included stints at artists residencies across the country and farming experiences gained at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello in the vegetable gardens and at Smith Meadows Farm in Berryville, VA – a grass-based livestock farm raising beef cows, sheep, hogs, layers and broilers. When Jake moved back to Maine in May of 2009 he wanted to farm the land where he grew up. He began to co-manage the herd of cows and flock of sheep with Pete, his father, and part-time help from his brother Arek who lives in Rhode Island.
At this time he also reconnected with a fellow artist-farmer, Abby Sadauckas. Abby grew up in the rural Pennsylvania town of Hop Bottom. Abby started Bacon Brook Farmstead in 2009 on a property that was once part of the Green Farm, which sits on the banks of Sandy Stream and Bacon Brook.
Jake and Abby moved to Bowdoinham full-time in January of 2014. Their farm enterprises are combined under the Apple Creek Farm label and include certified organic, grass-fed beef, grass-fed lamb, wool and sheepskins, laying hens, certified organic poultry (broilers, geese and turkeys), eggs, and certified organic goat, cashmere and goatskins.
